REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

The Food Safety Research Consortium (FSRC), a multi-disciplinary collaboration of seven US universities and research institutions, and the Emerging Pathogens Institute of the University of Florida announce a two-day workshop that will bring together participants from the private sector, government, academia, and advocacy communities to discuss the challenges and opportunities of a risk-based approach to food import safety, and the coordinated roles of government and industry in such a system. The workshop will focus on the issues and implications of reform efforts currently underway, with the goal of making concrete and actionable recommendations for implementation of this new risk-based approach.

The workshop will include five panel sessions and two breakout discussion sessions. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Subjects to be discussed include:

  • Key principles of a risk-based import safety system
  • Physical and behavioral risk factors affecting likelihood of contamination
  • Information needs for risk evaluation
  • Risk categorization of imported goods
  • Regulatory models for public and private coordination
  • The role of third-party auditing and certification
  • Verification systems and safety assurance
  • Information challenges in global supply chain management

The planning committee includes Glenn Morris and Michael Batz of the University of Florida, Bob Buchanan of the University of Maryland, Julie Caswell of the University of Massachusetts, Mike Doyle of the University of Georgia, Sandy Hoffmann of Resources for the Future, Michele Jay-Russell of the University of California at Davis, Helen Jensen of Iowa State University, and Ewen Todd of Michigan State University.

Funding for the workshop comes from a conference grant from the National Integrated Food Safety Initiative (NIFSI) of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
