Overview

As food safety reform is currently being debated in Washington with a focus on the federal government, we invited the public to an open symposium on June 17, 2008 to address the critical roles played by local and state agencies and how to enhance these roles in the national food safety system. This public meeting involved presentations and open discussions among food safety leaders from federal, state, and local government, the food industry, and the consumer community.

The symposium kicked off a new project intended to forge an updated agenda for enhancing the contribution state and local agencies make to the nation's food safety system. The project is led by George Washington University research professor Michael R. Taylor and includes collaboration with national public health associations AFDO, ASTHO and NACCHO, as well as with the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute. More about the project, which is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, can be found here.
